Different flies need different treatment. Knowing which fly you are dealing with is the first step to getting rid of it for good.
Appearance. The most common fly in homes and businesses. Grey with four dark stripes on the body, around 6 to 7 mm long.
Why it matters. Feeds on waste and food alike, carrying bacteria onto surfaces and food. A major contamination risk in kitchens.
Where you find it. Kitchens, bins, food areas and anywhere waste is present.
Appearance. Tiny, around 3 mm, tan to light brown with red eyes. Often seen hovering around ripe or fermenting produce.
Why it matters. Breeds in overripe fruit, drains and damp organic matter, and multiplies very quickly into large numbers.
Where you find it. Around fruit bowls, bars, drains, recycling and bins.
Appearance. Small and fuzzy with a moth like appearance, often called a moth fly. Weak, fluttering flight.
Why it matters. Breeds in the organic film inside drains and pipes. A sign of a drainage or hygiene issue that needs attention.
Where you find it. Sinks, floor drains, showers and any slow or dirty drains.
Appearance. Larger flies with a metallic blue or green sheen, often called bluebottles or greenbottles. Loud in flight.
Why it matters. Attracted to meat, waste and decaying matter, where they lay eggs that hatch into maggots. Strong contamination risk.
Where you find it. Near bins, drains, dead animals and exposed meat or waste.
Appearance. Slightly larger and darker than house flies, sluggish, with a faint golden sheen on the body.
Why it matters. Gathers in large numbers in roof spaces and wall cavities to overwinter, then emerges indoors in numbers.
Where you find it. Roof voids, attics, wall cavities and around windows.
