South Africa is home to several termite species, each with different habits and risks. Knowing which one you have shapes how we treat it.
Habits. Live underground in large colonies and build distinctive mud tubes to travel from the soil to the wood they feed on, staying hidden as they go.
Why it matters. The most destructive type. They reach the timber in a building from below and can cause serious structural damage before they are noticed.
Where you find it. In soil around and under buildings, reaching foundations, floors and walls.
Habits. Live inside the dry timber they feed on, with no need for contact with soil or moisture. Colonies are smaller but well hidden.
Why it matters. Infest furniture, roof beams and structural timber from within, often spread through infested wooden items.
Where you find it. Inside dry wood such as roof timbers, door frames and furniture.
Habits. Forage above ground for grass and plant material rather than structural timber, and are common in grassland areas.
